Registered nurse jobs are the most important occupation in America, according to a new survey from CareerBuilder.
That’s according to the survey of more than 2,000 US registered nurses, conducted in June.
A full 3.4% of US registered nurse employers said that the most likely reason for hiring a new RN is to fill a job vacancy.
That includes 1.5% of full-time RNs and 1.1% of part-time nurses.
But a majority of full and part-timers said they were looking for someone who is not a full-service RN.
“The primary reason to be a registered nurse is to provide health care services to people with disabilities, but it also means you need to be able to maintain your health care credentials,” said Jennifer P. Smith, director of communications for CareerBuilder, in an interview with Business Insider.
“If you are working in a hospital or a nursing home, then you want someone who has the ability to do the basic health care functions of maintaining your health, maintaining the equipment, maintaining your patients, and maintaining their care.”
The survey also found that more than one-third of the respondents were looking to hire someone who had been a full service nurse for more than 10 years.
That is a big jump from just 0.9% in 2015.
The median age of US RNs was 35, according the survey.
While nursing school degrees have long been popular among the workforce, there has been a lot of turnover in the workforce over the last decade.
“Many RNs are entering the workforce with less than a bachelor’s degree,” said Smith.
“The majority of nurses are graduating with a high school diploma or less.”
Many RNs say they want to stay in the profession longer than other professions because of the low pay and limited job security.
“I think it’s the ideal opportunity for a nurse to stay with their family, because the pay is low, and they get to stay at home with their kids, and I think that is really important,” said Stephanie Ruhlen, a registered nurses associate professor at the University of Michigan.
Ruhlen said that RNs want to work in a safe environment.
“I know from experience that it’s really important to be safe and in control of your patients,” she said.
But that doesn’t mean they have to give up on their passion for caring for patients.
“It’s also important to keep up with the advances in technology that are coming,” Ruhen said.
Rumblings of a nurse shortage are not just an issue for nursing schools, but also in hospitals.
In 2017, there were more than 9,000 new RNs entering the US workforce.
And more than 6,000 nurses were fired in 2017.
In the meantime, more than 1,000 RNs have lost their jobs, according, the Nurses United Network.
“When you’re in a nursing school or in a medical facility, you don’t always get to work from home,” Rumblen said.
“So you need someone who can work from a home base, who has that experience, who is comfortable working from home, and who can be in a team and be able communicate and collaborate with people.”
